black widow spider

San Diego's solution for spider control & extermination..

When people think of spider control they imagine John Goodman wielding acidic pesticide in a perilous battle with poisonous spiders out for human blood. While Arachnophobia may have been a hit in the box office, in reality spiders are more interested in eliminating the flying insect population.

The average person is very familiar with common household spiders; "Daddy Long Legs," "Garden Spiders," "Wolf Spiders," etc.

Obviously we here at Happy Pest Control of San Diego control all spiders, however we'll stick to the spiders that pose a serious threat to your family.

Dangerous spiders; Tarantulas, Brown Recluses and Black Widows.

Despite their ugly appearance, Tarantulas are actually not venomous, their bite can be compared to a bee sting and will subside with time. Brown Recluse spiders (or Violin spiders) are very dangerous, however there have only been two sightings in San Diego in recorded history - making the odds of finding one about the same as being struck by lightning twice.

Black widows are a common pest in southern California and San Diego is no different. The bite of a black widow can be lethal to small children (under 6) and the elderly as their immune systems are typically weaker. The venom is a neurotoxin about fifteen times as potent as a Rattlesnake's. In a normal healthy adult the bite causes extreme localized pain and intense full body muscle contraction and cramping. A female black widow can be easily identified by the shiny black body and large red hourglass on the underside of the abdomen. Widows are typically found in dark areas where there is refuge from animals and people. Normally we see them at the foundation of buildings and houses, wood piles and other dark areas that remain undisturbed for long periods of time. A black widow web is easily spotted - a typical garden spider web will have a vortex style that almost looks well thought out. However, a widow web is chaotic at best, strands zigging this way and that, with no overall sense to the design.

If you have children we STRONGLY reccomend keeping an eye out for this type of spider, as we're as concerned with your children's safety as much as you are.
